Our Objective:To engage the community of Lobethal in commemorating the role the OWM played in the Boer War, WW1 and WW2 in the manufacturing of cloth and blankets for the soldiers uniforms. The project will highlight the significant role the neighbourhood of Lobethal played on a national scale in the war effort.
Activities:
- The project involves telling the stories of the OWM workers, some of whom still live in the town of Lobethal, through social media and the making of a video/film.
- Youth of the neighbourhood and local schools and disengaged youth, will work with the RSL branches of Lobethal and Woodside to record the stories. The interaction between different sectors of the community will help to create town pride by celebrating the efforts of the OWM workers in the national war effort.
- Elderly people of the neighbourhood will be involved in ‘reminiscing’ and telling their stories of making the cloth and blankets thus preserving the history of weaving skills and techniques
- A website will be created featuring the video/film and also providing a historical context for the project. This website will be linked to the Federal Govt. initiatives to commemorate 1918
- The neighbourhood Arts groups will be involved to celebrate through artist mediums the project : Addressing and celebrating the artistic/creative skills of the neighbourhood
- OMWMI will be involved to showcase the collection of swatches and machines used in the weaving project: The collection will provide a real context to the project providing an opportunity to invite the neighbourhood to see the collection of national significance
- A celebration to launch the video/film is also proposed to be held on site at the Old Woollen Mill in the recently ‘refurbished’ Arts Hub. Adelaide Hills Council it is envisaged may provide some in-kind support to utilise this space.
The launch will coincide with the Lights of Lobethal event which is held over 3 weeks Dec/Jan and attracts some 200,000 people.
